During a very cold winter, water pipes sometimes burst. the reason for this is

I am not sure how precise this is meant to be, but I believe the answer is because water expands when frozen

Because the water inside of the pipes start to freeze, which means the water is expanding inside the pipe, creating a great amount of pressure, and causing the pipe to burst.
