Feature distinguished the upcountry from the plantation belt.
More yeomen than slaves, all worked depending on age/sex.
Husbands in fields, women in cabin, male ruled domestic sphere.
Grew little cotton/tobacco for salt/bullets at store, exchange networks tied homes to community.
