Claire read for x minutes, and Ted read for 3/5 more than that. write an equation the relates the number of minutes Claire read with y, the number of minutes that Ted read. Use decimals in your equation. the standard form for proportional relationships equation is: y = kx

symbolicallyClaire read for "x" minutes

Ted read for 3/5 more than that. → This means that he read "x" minutes and then 3/5x more, symbolically:

y=x+(3)/(5)x

The term "x" is not alone, there is a hidden coefficient of 1 multiplying it

y=1x+(3)/(5)x

To simplify the expression you have to add both coefficients

\begin{gathered} y=(1+(3)/(5))x \\ y=(8)/(5)x \end{gathered}

The fraction 8/5 expressed as a decimal value is 1.6, then the equation that relates the minutes that Claire and Ted read is

y=1.6x
