Executive Order 9981 was enacted in 1948 by President Truman and it abolished discriminative practices in terms of race, color, religion or national origin in the US Armed Forces and ensured equality of treatment and opportunities to everybody.

Therefore, this ruling ended the segregation procedures within the military service and it also set the precedent for the end of segregation in other public spheres. For example, right after in 1954, the US Supreme Court enacted the landmark decision in the case Brown v. Board of Education that meant the end of segregation in public schools,
