The correct answer should be D. patients
They wanted to help them or treat them or make life easier for them, which is why they opened hospitals for the mentally disabled all around their countries. Their ideas were that previous methods were cruel and unhelpful and believed that there should be hospitals like asylums where people should live together and socialize and receive adequate help.
