Xie-he's writings reflect the daoist notion of qi yun. Qi yun expresses the idea that energy is flowing through all things. Qi exists in everything in nature, such as people and animals. Yun refers to the idea of harmony. When combined, the idea expressed is that all beings in nature are in harmony and have energy flowing through them. This harmonious energy must also flow from the painter to the painting.
