in 12 cups there are 6 pints
we have 4 quarts and 16 cups that make up another 4 quarts so we have 8 quarts meaning we have 2 gallons so Joe needs 16 cups more

16 more cups because 4 quarts +6 pints +4 cups equals 2 gallons which is 32 cups and there is still one gallon left and 1 gallon is 16 cups
Hope that helps!
