Explain how the number of chromosomes differ from Mitosis vs Meiosis

When Mitosis occurs it is allowing more cells to be made with only the one organisms Chromosomes, meaning that you can have the full 23 pairs of chromosomes. However in the case of Meiosis, the data for the new cells have to be taken from more than one cells saved DNA so it will mix with the reproductive cells of the opposite sex.

Mitosis is the process by which your cells make copies of themselves before they die. Therefore, the new cells end with the same number of chromosomes as the original cell. one cell beginning= 12 chromosomes; two cell ending= 12 chromosomes each. (2N)

Meiosis is the process by which your cells make sex cells (gametes- sperm or egg) cells. Because you will get the other half of the sex cells from your mate, each cell ends with half the number of chromosomes. one cell beginning= 12 chromosomes; four cells ending= 6 chromosomes each. Half the number of chromosomes (1N)
