Decorations for the seventh-grade dance take 1/6 of the student council's budget. entertainment takes 3/8 of the budget. what fraction of the budget do these expenses cover? what fraction is left for other activities? (hint: To answer the second question, subtract the answer to the first from 1, which represents the whole budget.)

HELP PLEASE

Since the least common denominator between 1/6 and 3/8 is 24, the fractions are now 4/24 (1/6) and 9/24 (1/8). 9/24 plus 4/24 is 13/24. So the expenses cover 13/24 of the budget, and the fraction left for other activities is 11/24. I suggest you simplify these fractions if you can.

Answer: 13/24 of the budget for decorations and entertainment.

11/24 left for other activities

Explanation:

Hi, to answer this question we have to analyze the information given:

  • Decorations: 1/6 of the budget
  • Entertainment: 3/8 of the budget

To find what fraction of the budget these expenses cover we have to sum them:

1/6 + 3/8 = 4/24 + 9/24 = 13/24 of the budget

Fraction left: we have to subtract the previous result to 1, which represents the whole budget:

1-13/24 = 24/24-13/24= 11/24 left for other activities.
