Given in the question:

a.) A map has a scale of 1.5 inches: 200 miles.

b.) Miami and Chicago are 9 inches apart on the map.

To be able to get the actual distance, we will be applying ratios and proportions.

We get,

\text{ 1.5 inches : 200 miles = 9 inches : x}

Where,

x = the actual distance between the two cities

Let's now compute,

\text{ 1.5 inches : 200 miles = 9 inches : x}
\text{ 1.5:200 = 9:x }\rightarrow\text{ }(1.5)/(200)\text{ = }(9)/(x)
(1.5)/(200)\text{ = }(9)/(x)
x\text{ = }(9(200))/(1.5)
\text{ x = 1,200 = 1,200 miles}
