It's like you haven't been with your child and you finally want to get to know your child
Ex:
Hey! Dad
Hi? Son/daughter
I know I've been at work a lot so, I'm going to make it up to you ! Dad
Ok??? Son/daughter

It means that they are closely related to said subject but they no nothing or little about it and are planning to learn about it UNLESS they are talking about their own kid... then yah
