In rectal prolapse, the rectal mucous membrane projects through the anus, giving the impression of a moist red doughnut with glowing lines. It arises following a Valsalva maneuver, such as straining at stool, or with exercise. These symptoms are reliable with an external hemorrhoid. An external hemorrhoid comprises clotted blood and becomes a throbbing, inflamed, shiny blue mass that itches and exploits with excretion.
