As expected from a market based economy, the US shows that the private sector owns most of the media. Some billionaires, such as Rupert Murdoch and Michael Bloomberg, are longtime media tycoons who have made a fortune in the news business. Others, like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, bought publications as a secondary investment after building a substantial fortune in another industry. The billionaires hold some or all of America's many influential national newspapers, including The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times NYT, as well as magazines, local newspapers, and online publications. Several other billionaires, including Comcast CMCSA CEO Brian Roberts and Liberty Media LMCA. President John Malone owns or controls cable TV networks that are powerful but not primarily focused on news.
