explain why it makes sense to use a negative number to represent an account balance when the person owes money

It makes sense because if a person OWES money than it has to be a negative sign because that means taken away so the person who owes it has to give the money to the person who they owe, so when they do, they lose money (lessen their money) which means taken away and that means subtraction which relates to the negative sign and negative number to show how much money they lost.

when you owe money, you have lost money so the negative represents a decrease in your money
