First find the area of the rectangle by multiplying 12 and 9.

Then find the area of the triangle by multiply half the base (12/2=6) by the height (9).

Finally subtract the area of the triangle by the area of the rectangle

12×9=108
6×9=54
108-54=54

So the shaded area of the rectangle is 54 inches.
