How does the body avoid damaging the digestive enzymes in the small intestine with this strongly acidic pH as the food passes out of the stomach?

In the small intestine, there is a sodium hydrogen carbonate, which is a alkali. It can neutralize the food and therfore providing a optimum pH for the enzymes in the small intestine. (pH 8 - 8.6)
