Mindy, a local artist, sells a piece of art at the pizza shop for $15, and the shop takes 15 percent commission. Instead of receiving money, Mindy would like a $12 pizza, including 5 percent sales tax. Is this a fair trade? Explain how to find the solution.

If the shop takes 15 percent off of $15 I would take 15 x .85 to get this 15 percent off giving Mindy $12.75 to spend. With a $12 pizza having 5 percent tax you take 12 x 1.05 too get a total of $12.06 as her total. This means in an even trade Mindy would lose 15 cents to the Pizza Shop

Answer:

It is a fair trade, because 85% of $15 is $12.75, and the pizza with sales tax is $12.60.
