Indeterminate sentencing is much more able to allow for discretion than determinate sentencing. With the ability to take into account the offender's history and behavior, having a range of time that can be set for the length of the sentence and the ability for the prisoner to be granted parole can lead to much more latitude in the sentencing and release of those convicted.
