Answer:

Equation: 8 - (7/10)x = 6 - (1/5)x

Answer: 4 hours

Explanation:

Let y = length of candle in inches after burning for x hours.

Red candle length after burning for x hours:

y = 8 - (7/10)x

Blue candle length after burning for x hours:

y = 6 - (1/5)x

We set the y in both equations equal and solve for x.

y = y

The equation is:

8 - (7/10)x = 6 - (1/5)x

Multiply both sides by 10.

80 - 7x = 60 - 2x

-5x = -20

x = 4
