The answer is diffusion over capillary cell membranes. The carbon dioxide will transfer across the capillary walls into the blood plasma in where the concentration is lower. The lipid-soluble molecules such as oxygen and steroid hormones can diffuse over the plasma membranes of the endothelial cells.
