Perpendicular lines in equations are negative reciprocals of each other. If you multiply two slopes together and they equal -1, they are perpendicular.
3 * -1/3 = -1 so the slope is -1/3.

Equations that have the same slope are parallel. If another line had a slope = to 3, then the line would be parallel to y=3x-1
