In order to reach specific items of food that meet the dietary needs of the giraffe, they must reach for food up in the trees. Giraffes with longer necks are open to a wider array of food whereas the short necked giraffes are limited. The longer neck is seen to be more favorable. When a trait is more favorable, it has a higher likelihood of being passed on. The less favorable traits are eliminated or "weed" out and the taller giraffes mate with other tall giraffes, generating a greater population with this trait. Again, it is solely dependent on what is available around them and their surroundings.
