If you would want to know how many 1/8's you would have to find the LCD or LCM. Least common denominator of 3/4. It is 8. You multiply 2 by each side and you get 6. There are 6/8 of portions there.

there are 6 portions left because 3/4x2= 6/8, 6/8 divided by 1/8 = 6
