Jimmy ran 3 miles west and then 4 miles north. How far is he from his starting point if he went in a straight line? (It makes a right triangle.)

If you were to use the Pythagorean Theorem which is a^2+b^2=c^2
you are looking for the hypotenuse. 3^2+4^2=c^2. which simplifies to 25=c^2. So your final answer is 5 miles

the straight line would be 3^2 + 4^2 = X^2

9+16 = x^2

25 = x^2

x = sqrt(25)

x = 5

it is 5 miles
