"if a company has $152,000 of revenues, declares and pays $55,000 in dividends, and has net income of $89,000, how much were expenses for the year?"

The expenses were $63,000. How did I get this:

Net income = revenues - expenses

Plug the corresponding numbers into the formula:
$89,000 = $152,000 - E

Subtract $152,000 from both sides.

$89,000 - $152,000 = -E

$-63,000 = -E
Divide both sides by -1

E = $63,000

The expenses were $63,000

Side note, dividends are not a part of the net income and expenses.
