The Babylonian Captivity refers to the years that the papacy resided in Avignon (modern day France), rather than Rome. When Clement V was elected pope, he refused to relocate to Rome, remaining instead in France. From 1309 to 1377, all the succeeding popes after Clement V resided in Avignon.
