This was the Know-Nothing Party. This party had its heyday in the mid-1850s, and was generally considered an almost-secret society whose members were to disavow its existence when questioned about it by outsiders. This party grew out of the recently-failed Whig Party as a hoped-for middle ground between the pro-slavery Democrats and the anti-slavery upstart Republicans who were beginning to gain in prominence.
