How is a sound designer's approach to a soundtrack similar to how a painter treats a canvas?

The similarity is A sound designer uses background tones like a painter uses different colors. Either way, both of these type of artists used something as a background to enchance the quality of their works because sometimes background could mask/cover the incongruency that exist in small part of their works.
