Method 1 is just straight multiplication, with the equation
(3)/(1) * (3)/(4) which then equals
(9)/(4)

Method 2 is turning 3 into an improper fraction of
(12)/(4) and multiplying it by
(3)/(4). This is then equal to
(36)/(16). You then reduce this to
(9)/(4) by dividing the top and bottom units by 4.
