6x - y = 31 so y = 6x - 31
substitute y = 6x - 31 into 3x + 7y = 8

3x + 7y = 8
3x + 7(6x - 31) = 8
3x + 42x -217 = 8
45x = 225
x = 5

y = 6x - 31
y = 6(5) - 31
y = 30 - 31
y = -1

answer
x = 5 and y = -1
