How has our understanding of membrane permeability changed since the discovery of aquaporins?

Aquaporins are also called water channels, and they are proteins on the cell's membrane that allow water transport of water between cells. Although the membrane may have hydrophobic properties, it can allow large amounts of water to pass through such a membrane at a fast rate because of the aquaporins.
