While the suitors are all getting ready to face Penelope's test, Odysseus meets outside with Eumaeus and Philoetius. These are two servants of his household. Inside the house, the suitors are inevitably failing the test. However, outside, Odysseus is trying to find out whether the servants are still loyal to him. He reveals his identity to them by showing them the scar on his foot, and he promises that if they help him win, he will treat them like his own sons.
