Why might a mountain top and a nearby valley have widely different temperatures?

A mountain top has very high altitude, but valley has very low altitude comparing to a mountain. As we go high temperature decreases accordingly .That is 1.8 F decreases in 165 feet. As mountain are very high , so their temperature are very less comparing to a valley.
