They exist on the same plane meaning the two together must add up to 180. So we set (x+72)+3x = 180. Adding like terms you get 4x +72 = 180. Subtract 72 on both sides you get 4x = 108. Divide by 4 on both sides you get x = 27.

D. 27 should be your answer.
