Due to the lens is convex, you obtain a virtual image when the object is in between the focal lenght of the lens and the vertex of the lens. Which is the same that the object is to the right of the focal point and to the left of the lens.

Then, you have:

If a convex lens creates a virtual image, the object is _to the right_of_ focal length(s) away from the lens. ​

(when it is considered rays travel from left to right in the optical system)
