Why did Montesquieu Advocate the separation of powers

It should be remembered that Monstesquieu stated that his idea of government would consist of the "separation of power" in three branches of government. So it might be said that he advocated this separation of power in order to avoid that one person only could gain complete power, he was against absolutism as a way of ruling,
