when ur multiplying exponents with the same base, u keep the base and add the exponents

y^6 * y^-9 = y^(6 + (-9) = y^(6 - 9) = y^-3...but we want a positive exponent....so we use the exponent rule : a^-b = 1 / (a^b)

so y^-3 = 1 / y^3
