Why was water so important for traders in America’s wilderness? What about roads

Usually rivers were the important factor here. When you had control over the rivers you could control who traded who and so on. There more rivers you had in your territory the better for you. Everyone could use roads yes, but rivers allowed the big shipments on ships and boats to be transported from one place to another!
