exponents are how many times is the number multiplied with it self so in this case (-4)(-4)
the number -4^2 we put the exponent 2 because the number is multiplied with it self 2 times

For this case we have the following expression:

(-4) (- 4)

Using law of exponents we have:

(a ^ m) (a ^ n) = a ^ {m + n}

We use the definition to rewrite the given expression

Rewriting we have:

(-4) (- 4) = (- 4)^( 1 + 1)\\(-4) (- 4) = (- 4) ^ 2

Answer:

The rewritten expression is given by:

(-4) (- 4) = (- 4) ^ 2
