Based solely on random assortment, when a human egg is produced by meiosis there are 23 possible genetic combinations when a human sperm is produced by meiosis there are 23 possible genetic combinations. In a human egg, there are 23 chromosomes, one of which is an X or Y. If you lined up them by size and shape we have 46 chromosomes and actually 23 pairs of chromosomes from a mother and a father. Paired chromosomes are said to be diploid.
