Why is paying taxes considered a civic responsibility of citizens living in a democracy?

Taxes are necessary because they pay for things that most individuals could not possibly purchase for themselves, such as fire protection, schools, roads, etc.

Paying taxes is considered a civic responsibility of citizens living in a Democracy because if there are no taxes to provide for a democratic government, there would be no democracy. And let's not forget that a Democracy must provide for all of its citizens and without taxes that would be something impossible to accomplish.
