It mainly controlled the trade routes between West and North Africa. The North African people wanted gold and the East African people wanted salt.

Ghana and Mail are both very rich in gold and salt and controlled most of the taxation and trade. Kush is south of Egypt and became very powerful due to control of the some of the Nile and had very good trade relations with Askums, Egyptians and Himyarites. And the Aksum kingdom is in Eritrea.
