The California quail has adapted to live in the chaparral biome due to crepuscular activity. Crepuscular activity refers to animals who active during the twilight hours.

(I lived in California for 20 years, so I know this) :)

Answer:

They can acquire their moisture from insects and succulent vegetation but in extreme period the chaparral birds can fly to distant water sources in this arid biome they must leave for looking water, with theirs color they can camouflage in the foliage against the depredation. During drought years, the plants eaten by California quail inhibit its reproduction because of several compounds chemicals.
