What part of the body did early philosophers believe was the seat of thought and actions?

It depends upon whom you ask. The Egyptians thought it was the heart, but later it was agreed upon that the brain was the real seat of thoughts and actions. It's interesting that this contradicts the saying, "to learn something by heart.
