Factoring polynomials can be described as simplifying an complex equation. It usually involves squaring a term so that it is it times itself.
ex. a^2+2ab+b^2 factors into (a+b)^2

To factor a polynomial you must find values which when F.O.I.L.ed give you the starting polynomial.
