If 1 kg of mass disappeared, this only means that all of those mass was converted to energy. We can actually compute for the energy using the formula:

E = m c^2

where m is mass and c is speed of light:

E = 1 kg * (3 x 10^8 m/s^2)2

E = 9 x 10^16 J
