A train leaves a station at 10:40 a.m. and arrives at its destination at 1:20 p.m. Find the distance between the stations if the average speed of the train was 60 mph.

160 miles.

10:40-11:40 is 60 min., which is 60 miles

11:40-12:40 is 60 min., which is also 60 miles

12:40-1:00 is 20 min. = 20 miles

1:00-1:20 is 20 min. = 20 miles

60+60+20+20 = 160 miles

Explanation:

In order to determine the distance, we have to know the total time that train traveled. We know that the train leaves at 10:40 a.m. and arrives at 1:20 p.m.

So,

10:40 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.=20 minutes

11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.=120 minutes

1:00 p.m. to 1:20 p.m.=20 minutes

Then, the total time is 20+120+20=160 minutes. Also we have to know that the speed is the rate of distance per time. The units are miles per hours, thus 160 min=2.67 hours.

S=speed of the train.

D=distance of the train.

T=total time of the train.


S=(D)/(T)\\60=(D)/(2.67)\\D=60*2.67\\D=160.2

Finally, the distance between the stations is 160.2 miles.
