Why did the nations refuse to seek a truce during world war 1

Because the The thought that seeking peace would be unpatriotic and weak. The world war I was used by these nations to exert their dominance in the world. They believed that if they seek a truce, their nation will no longer held the chance to became the most dominant power within the world, so they chose the confrontation path instead.
