Given that f(x)=-x^2+6x-1

f(1) = - 1^2 + 6(1) - 1

= -1 + 6 -1

= 4

f(3) = -3^2 + 6(3) - 1

= -9 + 18 -1

= 8

Hence

a. f(1) + f(3) = 4 + 8

= 12

b. f(1) - f(3) = 4 - 8

= -4
