In The Metamorphosis, Grete performs her violin for her family's three lodgers. They listen for awhile, but become bored and lose focus. Gregor, however, is drawn by the music and emerges from his room with no care for his appearance. The lodgers declare that they will not pay to live in such a dirty place. Gregor's sister tells her parents they have cared for "the creature" long enough and that they should get rid of it, then bursts into tears. She claims Gregor can't understand them, anyway, so this is a discussion they shouldn't hide from him. She states that this is clearly not really Gregor, as Gregor would have left because of this treatment. Gregor returns to his room, locked in by his sister, and decides she is correct. He dies at dawn.
